November 2022 Music Reviews

Happy November everyone! Matthew and I are back with 4 more album recommendations. If you feel so inclined, please email me at “reference@deerfieldlibrary.org” with your own recommendations, I’d love to hear them! For each album recommendation, I have provided a YouTube link to a song from that particular album. Feel free to give each song a listen!

Sam’s Recommendations:

ARTIST: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

ALBUM TITLE: Cool It Down (2022)

After a long hiatus of 9 years, Yeah Yeah Yeahs return with their anticipated 5th albumm which has earned them a couple of Grammy nominations. As the album’s title suggests, the band has ‘cooled down’ their sound from their once dance punk sound to more of a relaxed, ambient sound.

SONG TO CHECK OUT:  Spitting Off the Edge of the World

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Metric, PJ Harvey, St. Vincent

ARTIST: The Bad Plus

ALBUM TITLE: The Bad Plus (2022)

The Bad Plus, a Jazz Quartet from Minnesota, keeps the musical listening experience experimental and fresh with their self titled album. Performing together since 2000, they fuse free form jazz with traditional. Each song is a different experience that ranges from smooth to chaotic.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: You Won’t See Me Before I Come Back

SIMILAR ARTISTS: GoGo Penguin, Moon Hooch, Mammal Hands

Matthew’s Recommendations:

ARTIST: Alvvays

ALBUM TITLE: Blue Rev (2022)

Canadian band Alvvays have been steadily improving their chill and dreamy indie rock sound with each album they’ve put out, and Blue Rev is no exception as they hit on the perfect balance of noisiness and catchiness this time around.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: After the Earthquake

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Snail Mail, Mac DeMarco, Beach Bunny

ARTIST: James Blake

ALBUM TITLE: The Colour in Anything (2016)

James Blake’s moody and emotional 70+ minute odyssey through electronic music and R&B is a perfect album to listen to when it starts to get cold out and dark early (that is to say, right now). All of his albums are good, but this one is his most explorative and easily one of, if not his best overall.

SONG TO CHECK OUT: Radio Silence

SIMILAR ARTISTS: Jamie xx, Floating Points, Sampha
