My mom raised me to be a reader. She read to me until I could read to her. Most Saturdays we went to the library and, later, the bookstore. I ♥ book fairs in gyms and book order forms forever. I start series at the beginning. Sometimes, the screen adaptation is on par with or better than the book (Miss Fisher’s Mysteries, Outlander, Cold Comfort Farm, Bridget Jones the Edge of Reason). I favor underdogs and prefer when characters listen to their better angels, though these aren’t deal breakers. Life is not simple and flawed characters doing their best on a bad day are interesting, especially if you can see where their flaws originate. I prefer to laugh, but melancholy and sadness have their place.

My To Be Read (TBR) list gets longer every day and I’m always looking to add to it. I read a variety of fiction – historical mysteries, mystery/suspense and thriller, sensible chick lit, and women’s fiction, historical fiction, fiction with fantasy or magic thrown in, general fiction, or combinations of all of these. I like compelling storytelling, smart characters, and detailed settings. I favor things that may be lighter but have some smarts. I like satire and dark humor. I tend toward stories with characters who are independent or defy expectations. I particularly enjoy those with women in unconventional roles for their time like WWII spy Maggie Hope, 1920s lady detective Phryne Fisher, or Egyptologist Amelia Peabody. I like spies; time travel done properly; old movies; and lots of things set in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and France.

Advisory is one of my favorite things to do. Connecting to people through stories they enjoy is always a high point of my day. Some of my current favorite authors are Julia Heaberlin, Elly Griffiths, Tana French, Celeste Ng, Sarah Addison Allen, Elizabeth Haynes, and S.J. Bolton. In my lists, I include the first title in the series because this is the most straightforward approach. I’m reading everything I recommend here.
