If you are like me, you are looking for ways to keep your kids engaged in a meaningful way while school is out this summer. While many of the usual summer activities are unavailable this year, happily summer reading continues to be available. Studies have shown that children who read over the summer do better in school in the fall, avoiding what is known as the “summer slide.”
I encourage you and your family to participate in the Deerfield Public Library’s Summer Reading Program 2020: Read Green, Live Green! The program is open to all ages. All children and teens that complete the program will earn an e-gift card to Barnes & Noble and will be entered in drawings for big prizes.
The 2020 Summer Reading Program, Read Green, Live Green will be conducted entirely online from June 13 through August 9. Register and log your reading online.
If you prefer to use a paper log to track your reading, download our printable summer reading logs. However, please know that this is only for your own tracking purposes, and we will be unable to accept printed logs this summer.
Adults can join in the fun by participating in Summer Read Without Boundaries.
If you have trouble reporting your reading online or are unable to download the reading log, please reach out to us at youthservices@deerfieldlibrary.org or by calling the Youth Services Desk at 847-580-8962.
For summer reading suggestions, please check out the lists below, or check out what we’re recommending, and contact a Youth Librarian directly through our Staff Recommendations page.
Your family continues to have access to a plethora of ebooks, digital audiobooks, and digital movies through the Library’s website with your library card. You will shortly be able to check-out physical Library material through curbside service. We in Youth Services are fond of saying that all reading ‘counts’ and that “reading is reading”. We encourage you to give the young people in your life free choice with their reading this summer. That will make it a much more enjoyable experience for them!
