Below are the instructions for the February 2025 Grab & Go kits! Grab one only in the Youth Department at the Library. While supplies last.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE GRADE RECOMMENDATIONS!
Make your own snowy scene!
Happy February! We just got a lot of snow, so it is a great time to think about what snowflakes look like and to create your own scene full of snow.

Each kit includes:
- Cotton balls
- Cotton swabs
- A piece of paper
Supplies you’ll need:
- Glue
- Scissors
- Other art supplies, depending on what you want to make.
Did you know that snowflakes always have 6 sides? Their iconic hexagon shape is created by water molecules bonding together. Ms. Kary discussed this and gave some great book suggestions in a past Grab and Go kit from a few years ago.
This activity is a great way to discuss different math concepts and do some hands-on learning! If you have 6 cotton swabs, how many snowflakes could you make if each has 6 sides? How about if you cut each cotton swab in half to create 12 cotton swabs?
Instructions for the Grades 1-4 activity are in each kit.
Supplies included in kit:
- Plastic jar
- 2 mini penguins on rocks (already glued to snow globe base)
- 1 bag of “snow” glitter
- Squeeze bottle of glycerin
Supplies needed:
- Water
- Stirring implement
Instructions:
Note: it is recommended to do this in an easy to clean up area as it can be a little messy
- Carefully open the jar and take out the squeeze bottle and glitter bag
- Pour the glitter bag into the jar
- Fill the jar with warm water (leave a little bit of room)
- Squeeze in the glycerin and stir (the lids are safety caps so press down as you turn to open it)
- Fill up any remaining space with water and carefully screw the lid back on (do this over the sink in case of overflow)
- Securely tighten the lid and shake it up! (we also recommend doing the first few shakes over the sink to confirm the lid is tightly closed)
- Enjoy watching your penguins in their new snowy scene!
If you have a strong glue at home you can add it to the inner part of the lid to create a stronger seal, but it is an unnecessary step.
