Programming for Patrons with Special Needs: Working with the Deerfield Coalition

This past January, we at the Deerfield Public Library were thrilled to introduce our new quarterly program series, P.L.A.C.E. (Public Library Access and Community for Everyone), geared specifically towards our adult patrons with intellectual, cognitive, and developmental disabilities, as well as their parents and caregivers. This new program series is just one of the ways in which the Library is stepping up its efforts to create programming opportunities for this underserved population.

One of our greatest assets throughout this process has been our partnership with the Deerfield Coalition. The Deerfield Coalition is a local nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities and their families. Not only have they been a valuable resource in the development of our P.L.A.C.E. programs, but they have also committed to sponsoring monthly social programming at the Library, and other local sites. This collaboration has allowed us to further expand the programming offered, beyond just our Library-sponsored programs. We look forward to continued collaboration to ensure that we keep offering great opportunities and programming options for adults with special needs.

Upcoming P.L.A.C.E. Programs at the Library:

Read, Discuss, Create!: Saturday, April 15, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

If you love books and art, this program is for you! Join us for an afternoon of reading, conversation, and crafts with this literature-centered program. It will include a short story reading, discussion, and a craft inspired by the story. Light refreshments will be served. Please register in advance.
