Read of the Week: Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda

Simon is in love and he’s not all that sure of what to do with that fact. He’s been exchanging emails with Blue, his mystery admirer who goes to the same school, when the emails fall into the wrong hands. In a flash, Simon finds himself being blackmailed by Martin, a maybe/maybe not friend with his own agenda.

Simon’s fear of the emails being exposed lies with the fact that he’s not-so-openly gay and he’s not sure if he’s ready to tell the truth to his friends and family. Adding to the complication is Blue, who is also gay and most definitely not ready for the world to know it. Simon and Blue continue to exchange emails and fall deeper in love, all without knowing who the other is. The drama of Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda intensifies as Simon prepares for the last musical of his high school career, Martin’s threat of exposure becomes a more likely reality, and the search for the true identity of Blue begins to consume Simon.

Cover_SimonThe authenticity of Simon, who is snarky, smart, sweet and hysterical, truly binds this story together. His oreo-loving, forthright, perfect grammar self is a wonderful combination of teenage boy and growing human being who is just getting the grasp of how gigantic, scary, and awesome love can be. Simon also has an extremely supportive and kind family and group of friends that round the story out and bring genuineness to Simon’s world. In addition, the emails sent back and forth between Simon and Blue are sincere, romantic, and just plain fun.

You’ll swoon along with Simon as he gets to know more about Blue and you’ll cheer him on when he realizes that he wants this relationship to go beyond the virtual world. I guarantee you’ll fly through this book and sigh in contentment as you close it. Simply put, Simon’s story is irresistible.
