Shakespeare’s First Folio Comes to Illinois

Shakespeare enthusiasts all over the country are rejoicing as “Shakespeare’s First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare” makes its way around the nation with exhibits in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico! As if that news wasn’t enough to make you celebrate, the First Folio exhibit in Illinois is much closer than you might think…right at the Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda from Wednesday, February 3 – Sunday, February 28.

Published just seven years after his death by two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors, Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies – now known as the “First Folio” – is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays. One of the world’s most treasured books, without it, we would not have 18 of Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, The Comedy of Errors, and As You Like It.

Accompanying this rare book will be a multi-panel exhibition exploring the significance of Shakespeare, then and now, with additional digital content and interactive activities.

In honor and support of this amazing exhibit, there are lots of fun, local Shakespeare events planned, including a Hamlet book discussion right here at Deerfield Public Library on Saturday, February 6, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.! Join Richard Mallette, Shakespeare scholar and Distinguished Service Professor of English, Emeritus at Lake Forest College, as he expertly guides us to a deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
