Staff Picks: “The Power”

What would happen if suddenly every woman on the planet had the power to electrocute others with the flick of her fingers?

Cover The Power 1Naomi Alderman takes you on a terrifying ride that digs deep into human nature and how a sudden shift in the power dynamics between men and women can transform society. Set in a not-so-distant future where teenage girls suddenly start exhibiting these new powers of electrocution and interspersed with ‘historical notes’ from a historian looking back at this time, The Power follows four different narrators as they explore what will become of human society.

Alderman’s skills as a storyteller (she is a protege of Margaret Atwood, the author of The Handmaid’s Tale) and her unique look into whether human nature is universal or if men and women behave differently when given ultimate power over each other is transfixing. I simply couldn’t put it down!

Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and other post-apocalyptic literature like The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (Meg Elison) and Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury) will relish this intriguing dive into the unknown.

You can put The Power on hold right now through our catalog. While you wait, be sure to check out the suggestions for other reads in the ‘You Might Also Like These …’ section of the catalog.
