The Bulls’ “Last Dance” in Deerfield With K.C. Johnson on the Podcast

On this month’s episode of the Deerfield Public Library Podcast, we welcome K.C. Johnson, Bulls Insider for NBC Sports Chicago, to discuss The Last Dance and memories of the Chicago Bulls in Deerfield.

One of the things keeping many sports fans (and non-sports fans!) going during these months of quarantine is The Last Dance, ESPN’s 10-part documentary series on Michael Jordan’s last season with the Chicago Bulls. The documentary features previously unseen footage from that ’97-’98 season–much of it shot here in Deerfield at the Bulls former practice facility, the Berto Center.

K.C. Johnson tells us what it was like to report from the Berto Center and shares his firsthand perspective on the documentary, Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Jerry Krause, and many “unforgettabull” stories from when the Chicago Bulls made their home in our village. Though the Bulls moved downtown to the Advocate Center in 2014, The Last Dance gives us a great opportunity to reflect on those legendary Jordan years, and beyond. The Bulls will always be part of sports history–and Deerfield history.

You can read K.C. Johnson’s work for NBC Sports Chicago, or his twitter @KCJHoop.

Interested in diving more into Chicago Bulls history? We made a list of books about the Bulls available on Hoopla for you to check-out.

And we know many listeners have their own stories of interacting with the Bulls around town: share your Bulls-in-Deerfield story with us on our social media or email us at

We hope you enjoy our 38th episode with K.C. Johnson! Each month we release an episode featuring a conversation with a notable guest, including authors, artists, and leaders from Deerfield, Chicagoland, and the world. Learn more about the podcast on our podcast page.
