Which book did Deerfield choose as it’s most loved novel?

In May, PBS launched its Great American Read program to find America’s most loved novel. A list of 100 books was created and Americans were asked to vote for their favorite. After months of waiting, PBS finally announced the winner last week. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was named the winner. One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, and served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture.

And Deerfield’s winner is…

We asked the residents of Deerfield to vote on their favorite read as well, and Deerfield agreed with the rest of America. To Kill a Mockingbird is also Deerfield’s most loved novel! In a close second place, Deerfield chose the Harry Potter series (which ranked #3 in PBS’s results). Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice came in third with Deerfield residents (and fourth on the national list).

If you haven’t read To Kill a Mockingbird or even if you have, I encourage you to read or re-read it. The audiobook version, narrated by Sissy Spacek, is wonderful and is available at the library on CD as well as on our Overdrive and Hoopla apps. And if you are an adult who has never read any of the Harry Potter books, these are not just for kids! Many adults love the Harry Potter series, as evidenced by the turnout of adults at our Harry Potter Escape Room event last week! The audiobook versions, narrated by Jim Dale, are also phenomenal and great for a family road trip!
