Grab and Go: April Showers Bring May Flowers

April’s Grab and Go craft kit celebrates April’s rainy weather AND the blooms that we look forward to next month. Your child can create an umbrella that flips to become a flower growing out of the ground! Kits are available outside at our green Creation Station or in Youth Services, while supplies last.

Materials included:

  • ½ paper plate (this will be the umbrella canopy and the ground)
  • 1 flower
  • 1 umbrella handle/stem
  • 1 brad

Needed from home:

  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Stapler
  • Hole punch (or you can use the brad itself to poke a hole)

Instructions:

  1. Use 1 side of the ½ paper plate to create an umbrella canopy. Color it however you like!

  2. The other side of the ½ paper plate will be the ground. Will your ground be muddy or grassy or a combination of both? Will it be a magical ground that’s purple?!? Color this side however you want your ground to look.

  3. Cut out the umbrella handle. Then color the back of the umbrella handle to look like a flower stem.
  4. Cut out the flower and then color it however you like!

  5. To assemble the craft, either use a hole punch or the brad itself to make a hole in the middle of the flower and at the curved end of the umbrella handle/stem. Attach the two pieces, making sure that the colorful side of the flower is showing on the stem side of the handle.
  6. Staple the opposite end of the handle/stem to the paper plate.
  7. Congratulations! You’ve got a flippable umbrella/flower!
