I Spy Dinosaurs!

Looking for something fun to do? Stop by the Library to see our new I Spy poster! In the north-facing windows near our good friend, Penelope the Pig, the poster features four cute dinosaurs, hiding among lots of other images. You’ll notice that each image has a letter near it. If you unscramble the letters on the dinosaurs, you’ll figure out Penelope’s favorite thing to do. Once you’ve cracked the code, send an email to youthservices@deerfieldlibrary.org. Be sure to include the secret word and a picture of your child. We’ll email you back a fun surprise!

Grown-ups, when you and your little one are looking at the poster, be sure to point out some of the letters that aren’t near the dinosaurs. Each image pairs up with the first letter in its name:  a for apple, b for books, r for rainbow, and so on. This is a great time to talk about letters and the sounds they make. What’s the first letter in your child’s name? Is it on the I Spy poster? What other things start with that same letter? Letter knowledge (knowing that letters are different from each other and that they have unique sounds) is an important early literacy skill. Early literacy is what a child knows before they begin to read and write. Doing things like talking about letters, pointing them out on signs, and reading books together are great ways to raise a reader!
