July Grab and Go Craft: How to Make a Magic Window

Our July Grab-and-Go Craft is here! Craft supplies are available on the clothesline on the west side of the Library on Monday, July 6 through Sunday, July 12 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

We hope that you enjoyed Miss Kary’s reading of Perfect Square by Michael Hall. If you have an adult share your finished craft with us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you’ll be entered for a chance to win your very own copy of Perfect Square!

Materials Provided:(if you pick up a brown bag from the clothesline outside the west wall of the library building, please only take one bag per child)

  • Two white paper plates
  • One brass fastener (taped to the back of one of the plates so that it doesn’t get lost)

Materials needed:

  • Scissors
  • Colored pencils or markers or crayons

Directions:

  1. Line up the two plates one on top of the other, and use the scissors to punch a hole in the center of both of them. (Have an adult help with this step!)
  2. Separate the plates, and then cut out a shape that will be your window on your top plate. It could be a square, a rectangle, a triangle, a circle, etc. If you want to make it extra fancy, you can cut shutters for your window too.
  3. On your other/bottom plate you can draw either one big scene or several separate little scenes.  If you decide to do separate little scenes, you should put the top plate on top of the bottom plate and color through the window opening, so that the scenes will line up properly.
  4. When you are finished coloring, put your top plate with your window on top of your bottom plate with your design or designs, and then stick the brass fastener through the hole and fold down the two little brass “arms” to hold them in place.
  5. Give your top plate a spin, and enjoy your Magic Window! (and be sure to have your family members try it out too!)
